Il se considère comme un « inventurier » de l’art. Inventeur et aventurier à la fois, l’innovation est la plus-value qui ajoute à l’œuvre matérielle. Il part à l’aventure dans chacune de ses pièces. Il ne se spécialise pas dans un médium en particulier, pour ne pas épuiser son sujet. Les matériaux premiers d’Emmanuel Penouty sont les détournements d’objets et les jeux de langage. Il manipule les objets comme il s’amuse de la plasticité de la langue. Ses figures de style de prédilection sont les aphorismes. Sentences courtes et tangibles, elles se suffisent parfois à elles-mêmes ou servent de titres à ses compositions plastiques. Depuis plusieurs années, il réalise des puzzles. Il détourne et encastre les pièces venant du commerce ou édite ses propres puzzles à partir de photographies. Puzzles et jeux de mots suivent la même logique. Il manipule les chaînes signifiantes plastiques ou sémantiques avec un plaisir ludique pour les agencements, invitant à des lectures multiples. Son travail ces vingt dernières années au travers de la sculpture, de l’installation ou de la performance tente de créer des liens entre les objets et les “choses”, et le langage. Sa pratique se focalise sur le détournement de l’objet “puzzle”. L’attention portée aux pièces de puzzle et la recherche pour montrer une image amènent le sujet à se plonger dans sa relation au monde. La complexité des images et de ce monde représenté est évidente et forme un lien de causalité. La trame du puzzle telle que nous la connaissons, inventée en 1930, est une forme d’avatar de l’image contemporaine numérique. L’image en pixels est autant de pièces de puzzle qui s’emboîtent. Il y a l’idée d’une fragmentation de la réalité, elles s’emboîtent pour former une unité. Les découpes et détours de la pièce forment des éléments concaves et convexes qui se relient entre eux... Ils sont des éléments ouverts à l’extérieur qui invitent à se connecter et forment ainsi une connexion avec l’espace environnant ou fantasmé. Emmanuel Penouty est né en 1970 à Soyaux, il vit et travaille à Bordeaux. Il a un parcours pluridisciplinaire. De 1989 à 1999, après avoir étudié la mécanique à Angoulême et Poitiers (1989), il apprend le patronage de vêtement à Limoges (1992) puis passe ses diplômes aux Beaux Arts de Bordeaux (DNAP 1997/ DNSEP 1999). Depuis les années 2000, il réalise de nombreuses expositions et performances, sauvages notamment lors de vernissages au CAPC, musée d’art contemporain de Bordeaux et au FRAC Aquitaine. Fort de cette expérience, il a réalisé en 2007-2008 Onetwofree.go, une expédition sous la forme d’un tour de France des institutions artistiques en embarquant 40 oeuvres dans une camionnette-galerie itinérante. En 2010, il participe à l’exposition collective Sculpture en ville organisée par la ville de Bordeaux avec une oeuvre flottante dans l’étendue d’eau du Jardin Public. Il a collaboré à l’exposition Pas si love avec les œuvres Relation toxique (photographie) et Sousou (sculpture) à la galerie Bertrand Gillig localisée à Strasbourg. En 2023 il a reçu une aide de l’ADAGP pour effectuer un inventaire de ses oeuvres. C’est à partir de ce fonds d’oeuvres sous le titre générique Inventaire qu’il expose son travail dans la galerie Tinbox Mobile #5 en 2025.
